V 13
In loving memory of
MARY OWENS,
who departed this life on the
3rd August 1893,
aged 37 years.
A loving wife and fond mother,
She passed away fortified by the grace of God.
Ah, I little thought when so near thee that night,
That the landscape of heaven was heaving in sight.
This stone is erected by her bereaved husband P. J. Owens.
R. I. P.
According to the Little Funeral Records Patrick James Owens died 14th February 1931, aged 88 years. The grave is very much overgrown and no other stone is visible. When relatives of persons buried in the old cemeteries before 1908 died much later, their bodies were often cremated and permission given by Auckland City Council to bury the ashes on the original grave in a concrete box. As this couple were Roman Catholic, cremation seems unlikely to have occurred. It is possible that Patrick James Owens may have been buried in the Waikumete Cemetery.
