Description - 5' 8", black hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, pockmarked complexion, 42, very good character, no trade entered. Served 21 years 6 months with the 58th Regiment and 5 months with the 48th Regiment. Discharged with lameness of the right leg, from a wound, and worn out. Married at Auckland 18474, 2 children and died 12th November 1877 according to the Treasury Pension Register.

Soldiers of a responsible nature were often employed as turnkeys in the Auckland Gaol, or messengers at the Public Hospital and Magistrate's Court after their discharge from the Army. Being selected for these positions indicates a man who was a steady, reliable person. It has not been established whether Mary Justin was née Johnston or Taylor. One name would have been a former married name and the other her maiden name.

HENRY JUSTIN, full age, 58th Regiment = MARY TAYLOR, widow, full age, formerly JOHNSTON, 6th May 1846 at St Paul's Church, Auckland.

Their issue:-

ANN born 21. 02. 1848 = RICHARD ELLIS 1870/169

HENRY (EVERARD) born 02. 10. 1850 died 20th December 1923 aged 73 years

BETTY born 07. 12. 1851 died 20th July 1902 aged 50 years as Elizabeth

MARY JUSTIN formerly JOHNSTON née TAYLOR or vice versa, died at Auckland 6th March 1857, aged 52 years. Buried in Section J of the Wesleyan and General Cemetery with her daughter, ELIZABETH, died 20th July 1902, whose age is transcribed as being 49 years but should probably read 51 years.

HENRY JUSTIN was recorded in several official documents such as the Inquest into the death of William Moore, formerly a Pensioner of Howick He is buried with his son, Henry Everard Justin, daughter Ann Ellis, son in law Richard Ellis and several Ellis grandchildren in Section E of the Wesleyan and General Cemetery, Symonds Street, Auckland. and photographs of both Henry and Ann's gravestones are included with this folio of information. It must be placed on record that the 1958 transcription of this cemetery lists a different date of birth for Henry Edward Ellis from that of the compiler. Likewise, my date is also suspect as no entry can be found to match either the date of birth or death in the R-G's Indexes. Althought the headstone appears to read 1878, the only entries located for a birth and death for the name of Edward Henry Ellis occur in 1880.

RICHARD ELLIS, bachelor, full age = ANNIE JUSTIN, spinster, full age, elder daughter of Henry Justin, formerly Sergeant 58th Regiment, and Mary Taylor, RG 1870/169

Their issue:-

RICHARD born 17. 02.1873 died 25th March 1875 aged 2 years

FRANCES MAY born 1874/1362 = FRANCIS ROBERT JUSTIN 1907/1362

? born circa 1876

HENRY EDWARD born 06. 03. 1878 died 27th June 1878 aged 3 months

?HENRY EDWARD born circa 1880

ADELAIDE born 30. 12.1882 died 11th January 1884 aged 13 months

It would seem that there was perhaps another branch of the Justin family in New Zealand as indicated by the marriage of Mary Ellis to Francis Robert Justin in 1905. Nothing is known about Francis Robert Justin.

ANNIE ELLIS née JUSTIN died 28th May 1899 aged 51 years.

RICHARD ELLIS died 17th August 1926 aged 79 years.

Died 28th April 1917 at 9 Wellington Street, but usually of Queen Street, Onehunga, MARY JUSTIN, married woman, aged 42 years. Born at Auckland, daughter of Richard Ellis, brewer, and Annie Justin. Married at Lyttleton at age 31 to Francis Robert Justin, engineer. No issue living. Buried Waikaraka Cemetery, Wesleyan ceremony.

Volume 23, page 173, C. Little's Records, Auckland Public Library.

From the NZSG Transcript of the Waikaraka Cemetery -

Death recorded in R-G's Indexes as FRANCES MAY JUSTIN died 1917/908. Note the various discrepancies in this lady's name. She is called Mary by C. Little & Sons, Lizzie on the tombstone and was born and died Frances May in the Registrar-General's Indexes.

4 Married 6th Maay 1846 according to page 96 of St Pauls Marriage Registers.
