DEATH OF MR E. C. HANDS

WORK FOR NATIONAL SERVICE

By Telegraph - Press Association Wellington, Wednesday

The death occurred this afternoon of Mr Eric Charles Hands, business manager of the National Broadcasting Service. Mr Hands was largely responsible for the development of the service in New Zealand. His technical knowledge, wide interests, and organising powers were extremely useful in the early days of broadcasting in the Dominion.

Mr Hands was born in 1885, joining the Post and Telegraph Department in Thames in 1899. His capabilities led to his appointment a few years later to the Pacific Cable Board's Station at Doubtless Bay, North Auckland. When he rejoined the Post and Telegraph Department he was transferred in 1927 to the telegraph division about two years later.

During the Murchison and Hawkes' Bay earthquakes and at the time of the disaster to the steamer Tahiti, the ability of Mr Hands to handle unusual problems was well exemplified. In december 1931, he was appointed general manager of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board until further notice, and in June 1932, he was appointed business manager.

Mr Hands is survived by his wife and one son.

Unfortunately, the date of this entry was not noted.
